Delta Energy and Environment Program 2019: Sowing the Seeds of Conservation for a Greener Thailand

Bangkok, Thailand, February 10, 2020– Delta Thailand’s (DET) Sustainable Development (SD) Team, Delta Volunteers and student participants in the Delta Energy and Environment Program (DEEP) celebrated 2019 as the fourth year of progress in local environmental education.
In 2019, 59 Delta Volunteers spent 3,666 manpower hours to teach 982 students from five local primary schools at regular school classrooms, Delta-sponsored energy education classrooms and at the Delta Thailand headquarters. Throughout the year, students in the DEEP classes learned how to save energy and better our communities through fun lessons and activities:
Workshops at DET Thailand headquarters
• Solar cooking: with reflective sheets that attract heat from sunrays
• Wicking bed vegetable gardening: a self-watering gardening method that draws water up from reservoirs below soil beds
• Discovering electric vehicles (EV): how EVs work and how they change our lives
• Green buildings: what makes a green building and why it helps our planet
• Transportation and carbon: how carbon from vehicles affects nature
• EV charging: how EV charging works
• Green city: making a green city
• Solar energy: basics of solar energy
Onsite lessons at schools
• Basic energy education: what types of energy do we use and how do we save energy
• Air pollution: what is air pollution and why is PM2.5 and traffic exhaust bad for us
Field trips
• Visit to a model solar-powered house in Ang Thong Province with water pump system to learn how we can use solar-power for home lighting and water
In 2019, 37% of the program’s students answered the DEEP participation survey. Respondents gave a 94% satisfaction rate for the program and 47.8% wanted to join more learning activities, games and demonstrations. A quarter of respondents want to extend the program and repeat activities. For the first time, students said they wanted to try eco-friendly products at home.
Launched in 2016, the DET-sponsored and volunteer-run DEEP aims to inspire children to embrace innovation and responsible citizenship to help build a smarter and greener society. The program’s long-term goal is to offer 42,000 training hours to primary school students in Delta’s communities. Over 2,300 students have joined DEEP since record keeping began in 2017.
DEEP’s objectives align with six UNSDGs: Quality Education, Affordable Education and Clean Energy, Industry Innovation and Infrastructure, Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action and Partnerships for the Goals. The program’s high level of satisfaction and engagement is the fruit of many hours of work by the dedicated DET SD Team and Delta Volunteers.
Looking ahead, DEEP is on track to continue on its positive growth trajectory and play a critical role in the well-being of our communities as we nurture a new generation of young champions for a cleaner, greener and healthier Thailand.
