Taiwan’s Delta Electronics has emerged as one of the leading data centre UPS systems & solutions providers in India. In an interaction with Digital Edge, Deepak Singh Thakur, Head of Business India & SAARC, UPS I Data Center Solutions I Critical Cooling I APFC Communication & Information Solutions Business Unit | ICTBG Delta Electronics India Pvt Ltd., talks about the evolving technologies in the power conditioning arena, and the ways his company intends to address the market with its sophisticated UPS systems powering the next generation data centres and IT infrastructure. Excerpts!
What are your views on the Union Budget 2021-22?
The recent budget 2021-22 has showcased the government’s vision towards strengthening the digital infrastructure of India. The upcoming Census of India – for which Rs 3,768 Crore has been allocated – can be India’s first digital census, where data will be collected through mobile app. Further, the budget also proposed to earmark Rs 1,500 Crore scheme to boost the digital payments that took of significantly during the impact of coronavirus in India.
These moves will encourage the development and integration of innovative technologies that can support the smooth execution and exchange of data which will require a resilient ecosystem where data centre infrastructure will play a vital role. India is among the key emerging market, where the demand for data centre solutions is rising to support the increasing demand of companies towards digital-first business with a move towards cloud-driven solutions to support multiple needs.
As per report, the data centre market will grow at a CAGR of 8 percent during the period of 2018-2024. The increasing penetration of the internet, smartphones, social media, and digital payment services will propel the demand for cloud services. These factors will encourage more players to drive investments in the data centre market where, as per another report, in next three years, India will witness an expansion of additional 28 hyper scale data centres.
What is your take on governmental provision around data localization?
The government’s policy towards data localization has encouraged growth for hyperscale data centres, which can offer great support in the rising data consumption. The companies are expected to increase their spending towards cloud systems in the coming year, which will also require a robust data centre infrastructure to support this rise. Further, the evolving IT infrastructure in the country is expected to understand the growing customers in financial services, manufacturing, and public sectors as well supporting the new emerging markets such as the education sector, which is currently witnessing a rise in the large volumes of online streaming contents and other services.
Technologies such as AI (artificial intelligence), industrial automation solutions and IoT- enabled solutions have been gaining traction and offer great help to industry as we lead to restoring the new normal. Thus, to meet the rising demand, companies need progressive technologies that can help them with such data storage. This data will be very precious for businesses and they would want to store, compute and analyze it to make strategic business decisions.
How do you look at the future of hyperscale data centres in the country?
In the coming years, the industry would see a growth in edge and hyperscale data centres –driven by IoT and digitalization. Hyperscale data centre offers the advantage that they can cater to the huge domestic data demand creating operations efficiencies that will pass the cost benefits to the customers.
Data centre Infrastructure is becoming a significant alternative for the real estate assets, and further, with the development of largescale hyper scale the properties, which were underlying are becoming more valuable. This leads to a new challenge to meet the infrastructure demand for both edge and hyperscale data centres.
Speed of deployment would be key and existing data center service providers will need to invest in new infrastructure and quickly upgrade existing data centres to meet higher power demands. With most data centre infrastructure for hyperscale providers still needs Tier-II cities for better connectivity, space is also a premium investment. The choices with data centre providers will be to devise a strategy to identify technology partners who can support on both edge and hyperscale infrastructures.
They’ll have to plan their future expansion green-field projects and fast track with standardization of designs. This is also a time-consuming investment and business demands will also ensure that alternate methods to meet the resilient data center power demands in existing data centres within the space challenge available. Also, demand for containerized and pre-fabricated standardized designs will be needed to cut down the time significantly.
