Meet the Happy Quokka on Western Australia’s Rottnest Island

By Shane Arnold, Delta Australia

Just a short ferry ride from Fremantle Western Australia is the island home to the Quokka known as Rottnest Island. The Quokka, known as the “Happiest Animal” on earth, is quite friendly and always ready for a smile while taking a selfie as many celebrities travel here to do.

The pristine waters surrounding the island are teeming with wonderful sea life such as seals, seahorses, dolphins, migrating humpback whales and the “Men in Grey Suits” the Great White Shark.

Spending just the day there or staying a few nights you can ride around the island in a day and visit the many bays, my favourite being parakeet bay or visit the World War 2 defence system and tunnels that remain as a historic reminder of its role protecting the coast. Finish your day at the famous “Quokka Arms” for refreshing drinks, food and live music with many others at the communal outdoor tables and make new friends.

I have been coming to Rottnest Island for over 35 years and it hasn’t changed much, which means you don’t have the overdevelopment experienced by many other islands. I have taken my children there and hope that their children’s children can visit to experience the same great preserved environment.
