37 Years of Delta Electronics (Thailand) told in An Interview with the Leader Who Grew with the Company

By KK Chong - Published November 27, 2025

In conversation with Mr. James Ng, a veteran leader and Chairman of Delta Electronics (Thailand), we learn about his more than three decades of leadership at the company. Throughout this time, he has continually explored new opportunities and guided Delta Thailand’s transformation from a modest factory producing small components into an industry benchmark for high value-added products and solutions. His reflections are less about personal accolades and more about teamwork, resilience, and the shared pride of building something lasting together.

This year marks 37 years since Delta Electronics (Thailand) began operations. How do you feel looking back on that journey?

It’s hard to put into words what 37 years really mean until you stop and look back. When I think about Delta Thailand’s journey, I don’t just see numbers or milestones, I see people. I see colleagues who walked beside me through long nights, shared struggles, and celebrated small victories. What moves me most is not the passage of time, but the camaraderie that has shaped our story.

When we started, Thailand didn’t yet have a “Delta.” The company’s founder, Mr. Bruce Cheng extended a sincere invitation, and from that first blueprint, we built something that would later set a benchmark for the industry in Thailand and beyond. Every achievement since then has been a collective effort.

What were some of the toughest challenges in those early years?

There were many. We spent countless nights on the production floor tackling technical bottlenecks, improving quality, and boosting efficiency. We faced fierce competition and setbacks that tested our resilience and confidence. But every time we hit a wall, the team found a way to turn frustration into motivation and results.

And there were unforgettable moments of triumph too like when we conquered a stubborn technical issue, or when our first major order was signed. We would gather in a small restaurant, raise our glasses, and feel that shared pride which only comes from building something and overcoming challenges together. Those moments of genuine joy and partnership are what I treasure most.

The company has faced several major turning points. Which stand out the most to you?

1995 was a big one. We were growing fast but faced a cash flow crisis. We decided to list as Thailand’s first fully foreign-owned public company, a bold move at the time. It opened doors we hadn’t imagined and gave us the capital strength we needed.

Then came the 1997 Thai financial crisis. Many businesses struggled, but because of our export model, we were able to hedge costs and even grow our cash flow. It allowed us to expand by buying land, building new factories, and fulfilling customer orders when others couldn’t.

Around 2000, we faced another challenge when major U.S. clients wanted us to move production to China. That conflicted with our commitments in Thailand. Through the introduction of three colleagues, Mark Ko, Albert Chang, and Johnson Lee, we connected with the European firm Ascom. It wasn’t an easy process, but with Mr. Bruce Cheng’s support, we made it work. We reorganized, restructured, and after years of hard work, we turned losses into growth and built a billion-dollar business. That experience taught us the power of vision, persistence and teamwork.

Delta entered the automotive industry in 2010. What was that transition like?

It was one of the toughest but most rewarding chapters. We knew it would be a long road with over a decade of investment, experimentation, and at times, losses. But the team never lost faith. Everyone from engineers to management shared the same goal: to build something sustainable, reliable and world-class. Eventually, our persistence paid off again. We started attracting steady orders, and the business became profitable. That transformation was another proof of what consistent teamwork and a clear vision can achieve.

You’ve mentioned many names over the years. What does that say about Delta’s culture?

It says everything, really. Delta Thailand isn’t built by one person, it’s built by many. People like Stronger Wang, Henry Shieh, Roger Chu, Beau Yu, Dick Hsieh, Anusorn, Sherry Wu, Sherry Xue, KK Sim, Charles Chung, Jackie Chang, Dalip Sharma, Basile Margaritis, Andreas Kostrzewa, Monika Fuchs, and countless others whose names may not be widely known but whose efforts have shaped the company’s DNA. Their dedication, sense of ownership, and willingness to work together toward a common goal of making Delta a success have been our greatest strength.

What do you see for the road ahead?

Over the past 37 years, we’ve built a strong foundation in people, business, and technology that has strengthened our global presence. Looking ahead, my vision for the Delta Group in the next decade centers on advancing key technologies such as AI, electric mobility, green energy, robotics, and related products and solutions, while expanding our presence in Southeast Asia, India, EMEA, China, and Northeast Asia.

We will strengthen our global management model through global to global (G2G), global to local (G2L), and local to local (L2L) collaboration to create a more connected and agile organization.

At the same time, we will cultivate cross-generational collaboration, blending experience with new ideas, keeping Delta agile and ready for new opportunities to drive sustainable growth into the future.

Finally, what message would you like to share with the new generation of Delta members?

Delta Thailand’s spirit of teamwork, courage, and resilience isn’t something you can find written in a manual or simply based on faith. It’s a culture built from real experiences and hard-earned lessons over the past three decades.

There’s so much wisdom to learn from our veteran colleagues, who have helped shape the company into what it is today. Alongside that, we’re excited to see fresh ideas, innovation, and collaboration from the new generation, the same qualities that will lead Delta to many more milestones in the years ahead.

I wish all of you success in your work and hope you’ll enjoy every opportunity to learn, grow, and build lasting friendships here at Delta Thailand.
